EUPHORIC
DESIGNS is one of the most sought after car
graphics design shop in the U.S. If you've been to a recent
HIN or picked up an issue of Super Street, you've
probably seen their works of art. Founded by Jesse
Chen, the artistic genius behind these stunning designs,
Euphoric has a clientele that reads like a who's who of the
tuner world, including companies and racing teams such as Tein,
DRFT, Motorex, Ross Petty's RX-7 and Ken Gushi's Mustang, to
name a few.

Racing Code:
What made you get started in the business?
Jesse Chen: I
have always been interested in the aftermarket industry
and graphic design. So, when timing and opportunity
came together I started the business.
RC: How has the industry
changed over the years? Are designs getting more elaborate? Have
people's tastes changed?
JC: Designs
have gotten crazier compared to a few years ago. Designs
have become more detailed, more colorful, and more intricate,
especially with all the drift cars.
RC: What
are some designs popular with the tuner crowd? I'm guessing not
hot rod flames?
JC: You'd
be surprised with what people request. But usually it can
range from simple roll calls to elaborate full body graphics.
RC: What
are some of the cool projects you've worked on?
JC: Tein's
demo cars and D1 cars; Tanabe/Kazama S13; Signal's demo
cars and 40ft trailer; Drift Day's 40ft trailer; HKS' demo
cars; DRFT RX-7; Invidia's demo cars; Motorex's 350z's
last year; Ross Petty's RX-7 for Rotary Power; Taka's Corolla;
Hiro's Chaser; Casper's S14; Verena's S13; Ken Gushi's
Mustang; Ben Schwartz's S14; Taniguchi's Aristo; Overboost's
drift car.
RC:
Which shows and magazines have your projects been showcased in
?
JC: SEMA,
HIN, Extreme Autofest, TBAD, Import Tuner, Super Street,
Eurotuner, Import Racer, D Sport, D1 USA, Formula D.
RC:
Are most of your clients local or do you work with clients from
remote locations?
JC: We get
some clients from Japan and the east coast.
RC: Is it usually
a collaborative effort where you meet with the customer or do
you have free reign to do what you want? How does your process
work, could you walk us through it?
JC: I'd say
it's 50/50. First, we meet the customer, and if they already
have something ready then we do that. If not, we get a
rough idea of what they want, come up with a layout, and
show it to the customer for approval. If everything's ok,
then we go ahead and lay the graphics.
RC:
Any tips for people who don't have a huge budget but still want
to trick out their rides with some cool vinyl graphics?
JC: A good
way to cut costs is by laying the graphics yourself.
RC: What do you drive
now? Is it tricked out with graphics?
JC: I drive
a Toyota Tundra. It's my moving billboard.
RC: What are your
future plans for Euphoric?
JC: I plan
on expanding the business by offering a wider variety of
services.

TOOLS NEEDED: Squeegee,
tape, and a spray bottle filled with water and a couple
drops of soap.
APPLYING
GRAPHICS:
1. Clean
the surface of the car where you want to lay the graphics
(wax will make it harder for the vinyl to stick).
2. Position
the graphics to where you want them to be.
3. Tape
the top edges of the graphics to hold them in place,
take the bottom, flip it up, and pull the backing off.
4. Spray
the water and soap to wet the adhesive side of the graphics
and the surface where you are applying the graphics to.
5. Lay
the graphics back onto the car, the tape should help
you place the graphics back to the original position
that you desired.
6. Start
squeegeeing the graphics to get all the water out and
wait a little bit for it to dry.
7. Pull
the transfer tape off and you are done.
REMOVING
GRAPHICS:
Make sure you got some fingernails and sometimes a heatgun helps.

Update: Since
our interview with Jesse back in May of 2005, Euphoric Designs
has unfortunately closed shop in 2006. We still think what
Jesse has done for the industry was pretty damn influential.
All the best to the master of vinyl. We're sure we'll be seeing
Jesse around.
